Counseling the Heart from Sinful Substitutes to the True Vine

This breakout equips counselors to identify and address the subtle idolatry of self that hinders spiritual growth and identity in Christ. Drawing from 1 John 2:15–17, we will examine the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life, tracing these temptations from Eve’s fall in Genesis to Christ’s victory in Matthew 4. Participants will learn how Jesus used God’s Word to overcome sinful substitutes and how to help counselees move toward the life-giving strength found in abiding in Christ, the True Vine.

Church Hurt

When church leadership fails, it can leave deep scars. When unrepentant sin is accepted in the community because of the leadership's silence, support, or even participation in the sin, where does someone go? This workshop will focus on how to counsel those hurt by their church, providing gospel-centered strategies for helping individuals process their pain and restore their relationship with Christ and His body. Counselors will learn how to walk alongside those who have been betrayed or wounded by the very community meant to care for them.

Helping the "Psychologized" Counselee

In an age shaped by pop psychology, therapy culture, and self-help content, many counselees arrive using clinical language and psychological frameworks to explain their struggles, reactions, and patterns of behavior. How can we respond with both discernment and compassion? This breakout will help counselors consider the influence of therapeutic culture on the counselee and offer practical guidance for counseling people wisely and biblically in an increasingly psychologized world.

Meditation Isn't Missing, It's Misdirected: Helping Counselees Cultivate Biblical Meditation

While meditation may seem esoteric, it is one of the most powerful disciplines we have in our fight against sin and in finding hope in our suffering. The challenge is that many of those we counsel don't know what it practically looks like to meditate on God's Word. The focus of this breakout will be helping counselees to better incorporate meditation into their walks to deepen their faith and grow their love for Christ.

Mental Health in the Church

The conversation around mental health is everywhere—but how do we engage it faithfully? This breakout explores what it looks like to think biblically about clinical diagnoses and the language of modern psychology. We'll examine what DSM diagnoses get right, where they fall short, and what Scripture uniquely offers for our mental health struggles. Rather than rejecting or embracing the clinical mental health world, we'll pursue a framework for engaging it with wisdom and biblical clarity.

Ministering God's Comfort to the Anxious Heart

Ministering God’s Comfort to the Anxious Heart equips biblical counselors to compassionately care for those struggling with anxiety by pointing them to the comfort of God. Many anxious individuals are exhausted from striving to control circumstances, fix problems, or do enough to finally feel peace, seeking comfort from things other than God. This breakout explores how to counsel sufferers toward true rest in God’s presence, protection, and guidance rather than adding to their burden of striving.

Ministering with the Joy of Jesus

While Jesus is often depicted as a "man of sorrows," the Gospels and Epistles also point to His deep, underlying joy, particularly in His relationship with the Father and the success of His mission. This session explores what it means to minister out of this same joy. What does it mean to know and image Him in this joy?
